Transforming Museum Spaces and Practices: Architecture, Sustainability, Collections, and Exhibitions in Latin America, the Caribbean and Beyond
November 18-20, with a Post-Conference Day on November 21
VENUE:
Auditorium of the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar (Ecuador Campus)
Address: Mariscal Sucre building – Av. Toledo N22-80 y Ladrón de Guevara, Quito, Ecuador.
THEMES:
Adaptive Reuse and Historic Museum Buildings
Historic buildings often host museums and storage facilities, especially in historic urban centres. Adaptive reuse requires balancing the preservation of architectural heritage with contemporary museum requirements such as climate control, accessibility, safety, and visitor circulation.
Museum storage as infrastructure: Sustainability Approaches
Museum storage facilities are increasingly understood as critical infrastructure for collections preservation and sustainability. As museums respond to climate change and limited resources, new approaches to storage design emphasise ecological thinking, energy and space efficiency, and the use of regional resources.
Hybrid Museum Spaces: Visible Storage and the Public Interface
Museums are increasingly opening their “behind-the-scenes” spaces to the public, creating hybrid environments that combine storage, conservation, research, and exhibition. These new spatial configurations challenge traditional museum layouts and offer opportunities for greater transparency and engagement.
Professional Practices and Collaborative Design
Contemporary museum projects require close collaboration between architects, registrars, conservators, curators, designers, and technicians. This theme explores interdisciplinary approaches to museum design, storage planning, and collections management, as well as emerging professional practices and training needs.
