ICAMT 50th Annual Conference – Taiwan 2024 Conference, News

ICAMT  annually organizes an important international conference
that gathers experts from different areas, namely museography, museum studies, architecture and exhibition design.

ICAMT 50th Annual Conference

will be hosted in
Taitung and Taipei, Taiwan

from 6 to 10 October, 2024
(with a post-conference excursion day – October 11)

Along with ICAMT, the National Museum of Prehistory is responsible for the organization of this event.

The main theme of the conference is

ENCOUNTERING TRANSITION

Reshaping museum architecture, exhibition design and techniques
in response to global/local changes

Introduction

In the dynamic landscape of the global and local cultural spheres, museums play a pivotal role as repositories of history, culture, and knowledge. As the world undergoes rapid transitions driven by technological advancements, socio-political shifts, and environmental changes, museums must adapt and evolve to remain relevant and effective.

The 50th Annual Conference of ICAMT will be an opportunity for professionals, students, and experts to meet, share their research and insights, and explore innovative approaches to the transformative forces that museums face in a fast-changing world.

The main theme and sub-themes will offer insights into various aspects of museum architecture, exhibition design, and techniques, highlighting their role in shaping the narrative of cultural institutions in the face of global and local changes.


Three sub-themes of the Conference can cover topics listed below, but not only:

Sub-theme #1

Cross-Cultural MUSEUM ARCHITECTURE 

  • Architectural influences on museum design from Western and Eastern traditions. Innovative approaches and harmonization of diverse cultural elements.
  • Dialogue and collaborative approaches between architects, exhibition designers and curators from Western and Eastern backgrounds.
  • Evolution of museum architecture/space in the past decade. Renovation projects in different contexts through the investigation of museums’ power and future visions. Probing the impact of global changes and cultural trends on reshaping museum architecture/space notions.
  • Cultural heritage, digital technology and human interaction – people’s perception and engagement with new storytelling mediums (e.g. AI, new media, etc.) in museum space and architecture.

Sub-theme #2

EXHIBITION DESIGN – tangible, intangible and digital: current tendencies

West and East in digital technologies: 

  • Design projects and ideas that blend Western and Eastern aesthetics in exhibition spaces.
  • New tendencies in digital, interactive, sensorial and immersive technologies in exhibition design from Western and Eastern perspectives.
  • Case studies on the design and impact of technology on visitor perception and engagement.

Diverse traditions and social/cultural contexts:

  • Culturally sensitive exhibition design in representing artefacts from diverse traditions.
  • Innovative exhibition design and methodology to create narrative environments/spaces in diverse social/cultural contexts.
  • Strategies for adapting exhibitions to different cultural contexts.
  • Current challenges in the transmission of intangible heritage.

Inclusivity and accessibility:

  • Architecture and Exhibition Design as a means of greater inclusivity: examples of the use of Sensory and Universal design on accessibility and cultural appreciation.
  • Social curation projects: pluralities in content production and knowledge transmission.
  • Dialogue and interaction between essential partners (architects, curators, designers, etc.) of the exhibition project.

Sub-theme #3

MUSEUM TECHNIQUES & Sustainability 

  • New sustainable practices and eco-friendly materials for the museum building.
  • Development of new, sustainable and recyclable exhibition fittings (panels, showcases, display technologies, lighting, etc.).
  • Promoting the reuse of exhibition materials. New techniques and energy-efficient procedures in mounting and dismounting an exhibition.
  • Role of sustainable architecture and exhibition design in promoting environmental awareness within museum spaces.
  • Diminishing the prevalence of blockbuster exhibitions.
  • Movable exhibition system, is this possible? Case studies.
  • Climate change and preservation challenges faced by Western and Eastern museums in exhibiting and storing artefacts.

Ways of participation and instructions:

Prospective presenters across the world are encouraged to help shape the Conference and contribute through

  • Oral speeches  – (paper presentations – max. 15 minutes)
  • Digital posters
  • Short videos
  • Highlight sessions (Ignite Talks)

  •  Fill-out the APPLICATION Form
    * Filling out this form does not imply mandatory participation. We kindly ask for this information to determine the estimated number of Conference participants in advance.
  • Prepare your abstract / proposal according to INSTRUCTIONS for Abstracts / proposals
  • Send your abstract / proposal to: icamttaiwan2024@gmail.com not later than May 31, 2024 midnight CET.
    * The proposals received after the submission deadline will not be considered for evaluation.
    * All proposals should be written in English.

After the Conference, ICAMT and NMP are going to publish a Proceedings
with all Full Papers, Ignite Talks’ extended abstracts and Digital Posters.

The deadline for sending the full papers of the selected works  is September 15, 2024 (GMT)

  • March 20, 2024 – ANNOUNCEMENT of the Conference and Call for Abstracts/Proposal
  • May 31, 2024 – DEADLINE for Abstracts/Proposals submission
  • June 20, 2024 – DEADLINE for sending draft visual version of Digital Poster / Short Videos
  • July 1, 2024 – ANNOUNCEMENT of APPROVAL of Abstracts/Proposals
  • July 1, 2024 – Registration opening
  • September 15, 2024 – DEADLINE for Presentations and Highlight Sessions, Digital Posters, Short Videos,  and Full Papers submissions
  • October 6-10, 2024  – CONFERENCE DAYS (with the recommendation to arrive 1 day before in Taiwan (Taipei) for transfer to Taitung)
  • October 11, 2024 – Post Conference Excursion
